Planning a Champlin Kitchen Remodel: What Actually Matters

A kitchen remodel is one of the best upgrades you can make to your home, but it's also one of the easiest to get wrong. Here's what to focus on so your project goes smoothly and you love the result.
1. Make your layout work harder
The goal is to get more out of the space you have, so focus on how the kitchen functions day to day.
Check your work triangle. The sink, stove, and fridge should be easy to move between without anything in the way. If you're constantly crossing the room or dodging someone, that's a fixable problem.
Clear your counters. Add deep drawers, pull-outs, and a pantry cabinet so everyday items have a home and your counter space stays usable.
Use the corners. Lazy Susans and blind-corner pull-outs turn dead space into real storage.
Go vertical. Taller cabinets and open space above the fridge add storage without changing the footprint.
Add an island or peninsula if there's room. Even a small one adds prep space, seating, and storage.
Leave room to move. Aim for about 36 to 42 inches of clearance between counters so two people can work at once.
Fix the little annoyances. Move the trash and recycling out of the way, put the dishwasher next to the sink, and keep prep areas close to the stove.
Make sure the fridge, sink, and stove form an easy triangle and that there's room for more than one person to move around.
2. Spend on the things you touch every day
Cabinets: Solid wood like maple, oak, or cherry lasts the longest. Soft-close doors and drawers are a small upgrade you'll appreciate daily.
Countertops: Quartz is popular because it resists stains and scratches and needs little upkeep. Granite gives a natural look. Marble is beautiful but needs more care.
Flooring: Choose something durable and easy to clean. Tile and luxury vinyl handle spills and heavy traffic well, while hardwood adds warmth but needs more maintenance.
Backsplash: This is where you can add personality without a big budget.
3. Set a realistic budget
Decide what you're comfortable spending, then add a cushion for surprises, because they happen. A commonly cited rule of thumb is to keep a kitchen remodel to roughly 5-15% of your home's value. Sort your wish list into must-haves and nice-to-haves so you know where to spend and where to save.
5. Choose your contractor carefully
Look for a contractor who focuses on kitchens and can show finished projects.
Read reviews and call references.
Confirm they're licensed and insured.
Get a written scope of work with costs and timeline.
Pay attention to how well they communicate. It tells you a lot about how the project will go.
6. Prepare for the disruption
Set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, coffee maker, and mini-fridge, and plan simple meals. Stay in touch with your contractor during the project so small issues get handled before they become big ones.
